Spare Stock HSF Fan?
Got an old Stock HSF Fan lying around? Well I did. I got to looking at my Enlight 7237 case, and that fan...and wondering just where I could use it.
It puts out a surprising amount of air for such a small fan, and the power draw wasn't going to be too bad. Got to lookin', and thinkin', and hmmm, Hard Drive Cooler Project, coming right up.....
Figuring out where to hole
So, I yanked off the front bezel and taped the little fan in front of the Hard Drive, to get an idea of where the hole should be, if it would even fit, etc. As a matter of fact, it fits almost perfectly, the circle just extends into the spare Floppy cover. Good thing I had two covers...
Notice those big drilled out holes in the lower part of the bezel, and the fact that I've cut the intake grill out of the case itself for the 80mm fan at the bottom. I mean, we want air flow, right?
Egyptian Tools of Architecture and More
And this ancient Incense Burner from the Egyptian Era certainly found a modern use. Just happens to be about 60mm. Just dump out the ashes of the last offering, and draw that circle. The next step is to get Mr. Dremel out, and cut away the circle. That took awhile, and then filing and sanding it smooth.
Before Closing
Here's the fan, mounted on the inside of the bezel, the power cord running through a convenient hole in the front to an available outlet inside. No kinks of any wires anywhere.
Buttoned up and cooling.
And, here's the finished assembly. It just barely clears the front of the Hard Drive when the bezel is snapped back in. Just too cool. There is a setback gap of about 1/4 inch from the curved part of the bezel to the spare Floppy cover that bowed a bit, but a little bit of Super Glue made the cover stay in place. This was the second Floppy cover I tried, and it looks a lot better than the first one, there's some weird angles to deal with.
Over all, it works very well for nothing. You can feel coolness to the drive now...and as we all know, cool=longer life. Theoretically. [ but, man, this winter coolness ain't doing that much for my longer life... ;0) Crow ]
Peterbilt Case Badge
Just another shot, only I got a wild hair and turned the snorkel up and then added the Peterbilt case badge. hehe...I'm thinking chrome stack, grill, who knows, maybe air brakes, ....;) It's about as noisy as a truck, too.

While you're here... check out this tasty wire wrap trick from Oden @ AOC....
Unwrapped wire
CrowDesigns Hard Drive Fan Mod   Here's what it looks like all wrapped up. It may not be a perfect job, but IT doesn't come by here too often... It sure makes a manageable mess of cable, though. The wrap is flexible enough to bend pretty much anyway you want. Quite the difference, eh? Even if there is no benefit of improved cooling, it just looks better. For $2.50 ?   I spent more than that on Nylocks. Thanks, 'O' , great tip !
OMG !! I found my RAM !!
